                                                THE ROTATOR
     PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Fellow Rotarians,

This week’s Program speaker is our own Dr. Bob Curry, Associate Superintendent / VP of Academic Affairs at Allan Hancock College.  Bob will be updating us on how AHC students are adapting to continuing their respective classes remotely and the financial impact of Covid-19 on the college.

The following week, May 19,  Incoming President Fred Donati will outline his plans for a successful year.

Be sure to let Fine  Master Ken Dally know of any fineable intel on your fellow Rotarians.

The “President For A Day” tradition continues with June meetings hosted by Past Presidents Susan Rees on June 2, Ken Dally on June 9, John Henning on June 16 and Scott Dunn on June 23.  Perhaps on June 30 we can meet at Buena Vista Park for lunch and a final clean up service project for the year.

Thanks for all you do for Rotary, YIRS, Cynthia

YIRS,

Cynthia

President Cynthia called the virtual meeting to order at 12:10 PM.Those in attendance were President Cynthia, Ron Nanning, Scott Dunn, Virginia Perry Sousa, Fred Donati, Ken Dally, Bob Curry, Susan Rees, Gillian Cole-Andrews, Alli Borja, Fred Pratt, Yvonne Biely, Carlie Engel, Heather Weare, Terrilee Coleman, Joe Biden, Nancy Pelosi, and John Henning.

John Henning provided the Invocation and Fred Pratt led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

There was one visitor, Gillian Cole Andrews, who was our program.  She spoke about Peoples Self Help Housing.  This organization started in 1970.  For those of you from Maricopa, that means that they are 50 years old.  They have properties from King City in Monterey County, all the way down the coast to Ventura.  They have 52 properties and over 5000 residents.  They call themselves “supportive housing.”  That means that they provide services to help their clients stay in their homes.  They have 25 social workers who help their clients maintain their stability.  Less than one percent of their clients are asked to leave their homes.  In the last 17 years they have had an education program that supports children from kindergarten to college and beyond.  They charge their clients 30% of their income to stay in their homes, and this is verified with an annual recertification.  They have their own contractors who build their properties, and they have never sold one of their properties.  They have their own property managers.  This summer they have two new properties coming on line, one in Guadalupe and Sierra Madre Senior Living.

President Cynthia turned things over to Fine Master Ken Dally.  He immediately upset everyone but Terrliee Coleman and Susan Rees by fining everyone but those two for touching their faces during the presentation of Gillian Cole-Andrews.

Ken had a birthday and celebrated by going out to breakfast, checking in at the gym, going to a movie, and then out to dinner.  NOT!!  He stayed imprisoned at home glued to the couch.  He made the group pay for his celebration.  He did warn us to read the Rotarian because he will be asking questions about the articles at next week’s meeting.

The NAMI group did send us a thank you for our donation to them.

President Cynthia did ask for Past Presidents to sign up to lead a meeting in June.

Fred Donati said that he had a conference call with the incoming District Governor.  It looks like we are going to be meeting online for the first half of the next Rotary year.

The meeting was adjourned at 12:45 PM.

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi said that even though things are starting to open up, we must still wear our masks in public.  She cited herself as an example, as she is wearing a mask on both of her faces.

Homer Hemmingway is the President of THE Rotary Club of Maricopa.  He is married to Ophelia, who is a beautiful woman with a big heart and he loves her, but. . .

She's five feet two with eyes of green,
Three hundred pounds with a streak of mean.

(I think if you add a pick-up truck and a dog you've got the beginnings of a country western song.)

He knows that she loves him.  Here are a couple of stories of their love and forgiveness.  Last summer she was in a store trying on some jeans.  She asked him the question for which there is no right answer, "Do these jeans make me look fat?"  Being newly installed as the President of THE Rotary Club of Maricopa Homer thought he should at least try to adhere to the Four Way Test. " Yes they do sweetie, because everything makes you look fat, because you are fat."  As you can imagine that didn't go over well and she proceeded to sit on top of him,  "I'm going to flatten you like a tortilla!'  Unencumbered by the thought process he asked, "Corn or flour?"  At that she started bouncing up and down on him like she was on one of those Wal-Mart backyard trampolines.  She ended up breaking his pelvis and a few ribs, and relocating several of his internal organs to places in his body they were not accustomed to visiting. The staff at the "Maricopa Medical Center, A World Class Medical Institution" patched him back together. Ophelia forgave him for his verbal indiscretion and for several months she nursed him back to health.  That's how he knows she loves him.

On Mother's Day things took a strange turn.  Homer is going to be OK, but it was touch and go for a while.  This is what happened.  With all the stores being closed with the exception of grocery stores and home improvement stores, Homer wasn't sure what to get Ophelia for Mother's Day.  He finally decided to get her a new chain saw from Home Depot.  When he gave it to her she got really upset at him, "Where's the romance in a chain saw?"  She decided to try out her new chain saw by separating his ankles from his feet.  After she chopped off his feet she did feel some remorse, so she called the ambulance and they took all the parts they could find to the "Maricopa Medical Center, A World Class Medical Institution."  The surgeons there put him back together as much as they could with the parts they had.  He should be able to walk again in a few months, but he will be about six inches shorter.  Ophelia apologized to Homer. She told him that she loved him and forgave him, and would take care of him until he gets back on his feet.  He believes her and he forgives her.  He's so glad he didn't get her a wood chipper for Mother's Day
