President's Message

It's really difficult for me to believe that this is my last message to you as President of The Rotary Club of Santa Maria. I want to thank all of you for the opportunity to serve as your President. I learned long ago that it is impossible  to make everyone happy all of the time, but I sure hope that I have kept most of you happy most of the time.

When Jason handed the gavel to me last June I let the membership know that I had a primary goal of having fun, while still being responsible, of course. I have always looked forward to our meetings, whether on Tuesday, or an offsite, or a special get together. What makes those times great is that we are together and for a brief period of time I can relax and enjoy myself with friends.

I like to think that we enjoy each other's company and for the most part know how to lift each others spirits when times are hard. We have had highs and lows this year in our family of Rotary, but in the end our Club has thrived. I'm proud of the things we have accomplished and I look forward to keeping the momentum in Michelle's year. I know that in every year there will be challenges, but if we take them on together and unified, our Club will have another great year.

Au revoir.

YIRS,

Her Royal Highness, Your President, Heather Weare

 Last Week's Meeting

Classification:  Sky Diving Instructor

HRHYPHW called the meeting to order at 12:10 PM.  Diana Harb provided the Invocation and Tom Ross led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

There was one visiting Rotarian in attendance.  Terrilee Coleman introduced Jerry Schmidt from the Breakfast Rotary and the Santa Maria Police Council.

There were several guests of Rotarians.  Virginia Perry Souza introduced cartoonist Leigh Rubin, our program.  Terrilee Coleman introduced Etta Waterfield from the Santa Maria Police Council.  Frank Culley introduced James Stoddard from Idlers.

Sunshine Reporter Frank Culley had no new sunshine to report.  HRHYPHW said it was good to see so many Rotarians at the memorial service for Andrew Millar.  Ken Dalley suffered a bicycle accident, but he couldn't remember where or when, so he just smiled and told everyone he was OK.

Terrilee Coleman introduced Etta Waterfield and Jerry Schmidt from the Santa Maria Police Council.  This organization started in 2004 and bought 10 tasers for the police that year.  Since then they have raised over $800.000.  They are having a golf tournament on June 11th at the Santa Maria Country Club.  This will be the 10th tournament they have put on.  The golfing is a lot of fun with special holes and surprises along the way.  They also have a dinner that evening with a comedian as the entertainment.  They stressed that it is all good clean fun.  They had tickets on sale.

Virginia Perry Souza introduced Leigh Rubin, who talked about being a cartoonist.  He showed us many of his favorite cartoons.  He started doing art when he was a mere five years old.  He has been a professional cartoonist for 40 years.  He works on his cartoons every day.  He loves to inject puns in his cartoons and likes animals to deliver the punch lines.  He had some books of his cartoons on sale for excellent Father's Day Gifts.

Our exchange student Nicey distributed the cook books that people purchased.  Many thanks to Jason Telander for printing up the books.  She sings with the Righetti High School Choir and they were having a performance on Tuesday evening at Pioneer Valley High School.  She did go to the prom last week and had a great time.

Virginia Perry Souza said that we have the possibility of getting an exchange student from Venezuela for next year, but she needed an answer by Friday.  Anyone who could take the exchange student for three months needed to contact Virginia immediately if not sooner. The student is part Japanese and part Hispanic.

Former basketball standout Rick Ellison is celebrating a birthday in Tahiti and scouting out training facilities for the Rotary Stuffing Team to train beginning the first week in June.  HRHYPHW vowed to "really make him pay" for not being around on his birthday.

Fred Sanders and Judy celebrated their wedding anniversary.  Fred was not in attendance, but using her woman's intuition, HRHYPHW knew that Fred would willingly pay a handsome assessment for the anniversary.

Camille O'Brien celebrated her 19th year in Rotary.  She gladly paid $20, instead  of aggravating the "evil queen" and getting an even steeper assessment.

Allison Borja celebrated her final performance of "Murder in Morocco" by not skipping any pages in the dialog.  She paid $10 for her swan song.

Jason Diani reminded us that HRHYPHW's step down is on June 19th at the Radisson.  Please RSVP to Jason if you want to attend.

Alice Patino bragged that her granddaughter, who is in junior high, won the "break away roping" competition and is going to South Dakota for the national championships.  She is also going to be competing with her father at the Elks Rodeo next week.  She was going to pay $40, but later changed it to $50.

Fred Donati went to Greece for two and a half weeks to visit with his son and his family.  He saw many interesting sites and also visited a refugee camp, which was a real mess.  He paid $75 to not have to go back there.

There was $1640.50 as the winner's share of the 50/50 pot.  Jason Diani had the lucky ticket and he became the happiest person in the meeting when he selected the correct marble.  If he doesn't tell his wife about this, drinks are on Jason next week.

The meeting was adjourned at 1:28 PM.
