President's Message

Fellow Rotarians,

We are meeting offsite this week, as we travel to Guadalupe to hear from Alejandra Mahoney about the food rescue program. The presentation will include a lunch prepared by their kitchen, so it should be an interesting and informative meeting. We hope you can join us.

The address is the Guadalupe Senior Center, 4545 10th St, across from the water tower.

We’ve also got several upcoming speaker vacancies, so please reach out to your colleagues, friends, and contacts about presenting a program for our club. You can continue to add your speakers to our calendar at this link: http://tinyurl.com/SMRotaryCalendar

Maricopa Update

Last week Homer Higgenbottom and Januvius Winterbottom met at the local coffee shop to discuss classified documents and making money.  Januvius started the conversation, "Did you see they have a new shop in the mall?  It's called "All Things Classified."  "No I didn't know about the new shop," replied Homer.  "And what do they sell in this new shop?"  "Januvius said, "With new batches of top secret classified documents being found every day by lawyers, the owner of this shop has sent out teams of detectives all around the country to see if they could find some themselves.  His teams have found top secret classified documents going all the way back to the founding of our country.  Now people from all over the world are going to his shop to buy these documents."  Homer inquired, "Are you sure that all these documents are legitimate?  What kind of secrets are being sold?"  Januvius answered, "Personally I bought George Washington's list of spies along with all their phone numbers."  Homer piped up, "I don't think that is authentic.  The phone wasn't even invented when George Washington was President."  "How about this one?  I bought the positions of all the Confederate airplanes that Abraham Lincoln had."  Homer burst his bubble again, "I'm sorry to tell you that the Confederates didn't have any airplanes."  "OK.  Do you think my list of Hitler's military leaders and their email addresses is real?"  Homer said, "I'm afraid not.  I think this shop is selling bogus documents. He's not following the Four Way Test."

The Rotary Club of Santa Maria Elevator Speech

We are a leadership organization comprised of local business, civic, and professional leaders.

We are a nonpolitical nonsectarian service club.

We meet regularly to get to know each other, form friendships, and get things done in our community.

In 2020 we had a virtual fundraiser and raised over $53,000  which we gave to five local charities:

     Orcutt Trails

     CASA

     Casa of Hope

     ECHO/Band of Brothers

     YMCA

We support the Interact Club at St. Joseph's High School and we donate scholarships to Allan Hancock College.

We clean up Buena Vista Park and with three other Rotary clubs we coordinate the Rotary Christmas Parade.

Come and learn more about our club's humanitarian service and high ethical standards and help us build good will in our community.

THE FOUR-WAY TEST
of the things we think, say, or do:

1.  Is it the truth?
2.  Is it fair to all concerned?
3.  Will it build goodwill and better friendships?
4.  Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

THE OBJECT OF ROTARY

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

First The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

Second High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as on opportunity to serve society;

Third The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

Fourth The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

ROTARIAN CODE OF CONDUCT

The following code of conduct has been adopted for the use of Rotarians:

1.  Act with integrity and high ethical standards in my personal and professional life
2.  Deal fairly with others and treat them and their occupations with respect
3.  Use my professional skills through Rotary to:  mentor young people, help those with special needs, and improve people's quality of life in my community and in the world
