President's Message

Hello Noon Rotarians,

Club members reminder . . . Wine Experience” Team Bob and Richard are looking for your 2 bottles of great wine this Tuesday.  Alternatively billing is $50.

**Reminder: Bring $2.00 cash for exemption badge drawing.

Last week a lively group of Noon Rotarians left the Natural History Museum with smiles on their faces and Fox and Elephant Beeny Babies in their hands. Thanks to program speaker Santa Barbara Zoo CEO Rich Block.  The 28 acre Zoo is a multi million dollar operation with hundreds of staff.  Rich structured a comprehensive overview of operations on the business side with engaging side stories of the “inmates” and their escapades.  The group learned of a recent compensation analysis resulting in a major salary adjustment for the entire Zoo costing over 1.5 million dollars!  The Zoo is open 365 days a year!!  Quizes were passed out with #2 sharpened pencils for a fun tour through some of the newest exhibits.  Who knew that Condors only lay one egg and have one chick every two years due to extensive parenting duties?  What a great program!

Thank you also to Judy Garrett (wife of Clif Garrett the Historian) President of the Natural History Museum who gave a short historical background talk on the Hart Home (donated to the City by Heather’s Grandfather, Lawrence Perry) where the NHM resides.   The Museum is open to the public free of charge Wednesday-Saturday.  Pizza was “on the house” too.  Thanks NHM!

Please try your best to be present at the Inn Tuesday May 24th for our Club “Annual Meeting”, election of fiscal year 2022-23 board of directors, Club annual contributions and volunteerism recap and presentation of Polio Plus Certificates.

Two member highlights will be the “History Moment” with Ron Nanning and Exemption Badge with Tom Allen.

The International highlight will be a surprise long distance Zoom participant!  Please try to think of questions you might ask if you were talking to a Romanian District Governor Elect in the country of Romania.

Plus!: the kitchen promises the best menu of the year to date…wonder what that will be?

Maricopa Update

Last week investigative reporter and part time dog walker Scoop De Poop reported on a new archeological find by the Archeology Department at U. C. Maricopa.  They discovered the real reason Moses wandered in the desert for 40 years looking for the Promised Land.  It turns out that Moses knew where he was supposed to go, but once he took the wrong turn, he refused to stop and ask directions.  For many hundreds of years women have suspected as much, but now the researchers have confirmed it.

The Rotary Club of Santa Maria Elevator Speech

We are a leadership organization comprised of local business, civic, and professional leaders.

We are a nonpolitical nonsectarian service club.

We meet regularly to get to know each other, form friendships, and get things done in our community.

In 2020 we had a virtual fundraiser and raised over $53,000  which we gave to five local charities:

     Orcutt Trails

     CASA

     Casa of Hope

     ECHO/Band of Brothers

     YMCA

We support the Interact Club at St. Joseph's High School and we donate scholarships to Allan Hancock College.

We clean up Buena Vista Park and with three other Rotary clubs we coordinate the Rotary Christmas Parade.

Come and learn more about our club's humanitarian service and high ethical standards and help us build good will in our community.

THE FOUR-WAY TEST

of the things we think, say, or do:

1.  Is it the truth?
2.  Is it fair to all concerned?
3.  Will it build goodwill and better friendships?
4.  Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

THE OBJECT OF ROTARY

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

First The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

Second High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as on opportunity to serve society;

Third The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

Fourth The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

ROTARIAN CODE OF CONDUCT

The following code of conduct has been adopted for the use of Rotarians:

As a Rotarian, I will

1.  Act with integrity and high ethical standards in my personal and professional life
2.  Deal fairly with others and treat them and their occupations with respect
3.  Use my professional skills through Rotary to:  mentor young people, help those with special needs, and improve people's quality of life in my community and in the world
4.  Avoid behavior that reflects adversely on Rotary or other Rotarians
5.  Help maintain a  harassment-free environment in Rotary meetings, events, and activities, report any suspected harassment, and help ensure non-retaliation to those individuals that report harassment.
