Thank you to the small but mighty group of Rotarians who cleaned Buena Vista Park last week. Thank you as well to our many members who participated in yesterday’s Rotary Day of Service at the Rotary Centennial Park! Between the breakfast, noon, and evening clubs and the high school students who participated, we had an army of volunteers who swiftly planted dozens of plants and spread wood chips in the park planters and playground. It was a great project, and we finished well before noon!
Our speaker this week is Past District Governor Nick Frankle, who will be presenting about the Rotary Foundation. He’ll explain what it is, how it operates here and throughout the world, and he will talk about how clubs can get involved in grant projects. It should be very educational, and we hope to see you there!
Upcoming presentations: please note we have an opening for a speaker on June 6, so if you have someone in mind, you can add them at this link: http://tinyurl.com/SMRotaryCalendar

Park Cleanup
Many thanks to President Bob, President Elect James, Amalia Rea, Pamela Macal, Yvonne Biely, Jorge Chavez, Laura Mohajer, and John and Sharon Henning for picking up the trash at Buena Vista Park last Tuesday.
Rotary Day of Service
Many Rotarians and other volunteers had a great time last Saturday at Rotary Centennial Park planting bushes and plants and spreading wood chips (and other stuff too). Many thanks to President Bob, President Elect James, Laura Mohajer, Jorge Chavez and family, Pamela Macal, Marga Cooley, Yvonne Biely, and John Henning for all their hard work.
The Rotary Cleanup Day served a dual purpose for John Henning, Jorge Chavez, and Laura Mohajer. They used this opportunity to practice their skills at holding up shovels and rakes in preparation for their upcoming interviews with Caltrans.
Wine Raffle
Our Rotary Club is having its wine raffle on June 6th. All members are asked to bring in two bottles of wine of some value (no Two Buck Chuck or Ripple). James Stoddard is collecting the wine any time between now and the end of May. You will also be asked to sell or purchase $100 of tickets, 5 tickets of $20 each.

Maricopa Update
Last week Homer Higgenbottom and Januvius Winterbottom met at the local coffee shop to discuss fitness and body image. Januvius started, "Remember my New Year's resolution that I was going to get in shape. Well, I've been working really hard at it for four months, and I have little to show for it. I really wanted to impress all the women at the pool with my six pack this summer." Homer replied, "I'm sorry your physical fitness plan hasn't worked out. I don't know that the women at the pool are going to be all that impressed with a six pack. I think honesty, kindness, consideration, and a sense of humor are things that most women are looking for." Januvius said, "I think you are right, but in case you and I are wrong I want to hedge my bets." Homer sighed, "Don't tell me you have come up with another harebrained scheme." "Not exactly," began Januvius, "Since I don't have a real six pack I was planning on getting a six pack tattoo on my abs. I think that will impress all the women." "That's not going to improve your physical fitness and it's not going to impress any women. Have you forgotten everything I have told you about following the Four Way Test?" asked Homer. "If you follow that you won't go wrong." Januvius cowered, "I guess you are right. I'm going to go back to the gym and work on my sit ups. I'm all the way up to three a day."

The Rotary Club of Santa Maria Elevator Speech
We are a leadership organization comprised of local business, civic, and professional leaders.
We are a nonpolitical nonsectarian service club.
We meet regularly to get to know each other, form friendships, and get things done in our community.
In 2020 we had a virtual fundraiser and raised over $53,000 which we gave to five local charities:
Orcutt Trails
CASA
Casa of Hope
ECHO/Band of Brothers
YMCA
We support the Interact Club at St. Joseph's High School and we donate scholarships to Allan Hancock College.
We clean up Buena Vista Park and with three other Rotary clubs we coordinate the Rotary Christmas Parade.
Come and learn more about our club's humanitarian service and high ethical standards and help us build good will in our community.
THE FOUR-WAY TEST
of the things we think, say, or do:
1. Is it the truth?
2. Is it fair to all concerned?
3. Will it build goodwill and better friendships?
4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
THE OBJECT OF ROTARY
The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:
First The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;
Second High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as on opportunity to serve society;
Third The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;
Fourth The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.
