Dear Fellow Rotarians,
Last week, Cynthia Schur kick-started her year as incoming President with a Board Retreat. The new board is in place and ready to roll up their sleeves and get started! Cynthia has lots of great ideas and goals planned for the year. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for the new year!
Last week, Brook Town gave a wonderful presentation of what it means to be a local businessperson. She showed us how, as Fred Sanders put it, “[she’s] clearly delivering so much more than a delicious meal.” What a great program by Bob Frias and Scott Dunn. What a great role model she is!
John Henning will lead the meeting as the first Past-President in lineup for June in line with our club tradition. Leafy Green Marketing will be joining us tomorrow. They’re working hard to keep California leafy green vegetables safe. This is sure to be interesting.
Until our next meeting, make today ridiculously amazing!! And Dare to be EXTRAordinary!

JUNE 4th, 2019 MEETING
SPECIAL PAST-PRESIDENT MEETING LEADER
JOHN HENNING (2002 - 2003)
AND
SPECIAL GUEST SPEAKER
DAN SUTTON
President, Leafy Green Marketing
The Leafy Green Marketing Association (LGMA) is the only organization in California working to keep our leafy
green vegetables safe. Dan is a graduate of the California AG Leadership program and is a graduate of Cal Poly-SLO.
He is the General Manager of the Pismo-Oceano Vegetable Exchange (POVE) and was elected President of the Leafy
Green Marketing Association. A long-time advocate for the Ag industry, Dan has also served as a member of the
Executive Board for the San Luis Obispo County Farm Bureau.
The LGMA Board met April 19 and voted to STRENGTHEN mandatory food safety practices required on farms. Every box of leafy greens placed into commerce by a certified LGMA member will soon be produced under new, more stringent requirements that are designed to reduce risk when it comes to water used in growing leafy greens. The updates include specific directives such as no longer allowing the use of untreated surface water for overhead irrigation of leafy greens prior to harvest.
JOIN US TUESDAY, 6/4/2019 TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THIS IMPORTANT ORGANIZATION

MEETING NOTES
From the MAY 28, 2019 Meeting
WITH "THANKS" to John Henning for taking notes
in Rotator Editor Jim's absence.....as is the case EVERY week,
the Club, its Rotator Editor, and John Henning are NOT
responsible for the accuracy of this accounting of the meeting.
We NEVER let accuracy or the truth get in the way of good Meeting Notes!
Just back from the Salt Lake beef steak, tasty cake, easy bake, rattle snake, hard-to-fake, belly ache, give-and-take, frosted flake clam bake , President Michelle called the meeting to order at 12:10 PM. Yvonne Biely provided the Invocation and Carlie Engel led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.
Lynda Gantt introduce visiting Rotarian Ann Green, former member of the evening club.
President Michelle introduced her husband and guest, Hank Shipman.
Virginia Perry Souza introduced our speakers, Brooke and Jacob Town, from “Spoon Trade.” She then introduced her “special guest” Erin Krier.
Virginia then introduced our program. Brooke talked about her journey into owning and operating “Spoon Trade.” She worked as a hostess at a restaurant in Pismo Beach. When the restaurant closed she quickly got a job at another restaurant where she met Jacob, who was the chef. After several years of working in various restaurants in Pismo they decided that they wanted to pursue their education so they moved to San Francisco. She went to art school and he went to culinary school. After graduation they worked at upscale restaurants in the Bay Area for a few years. When they had great difficulty in trying to buy a house, they decided to chuck it all and drove around the country in their 1966 Volkswagen van. After several months of that they returned to the central coast where they had decided they wanted to open a restaurant. They found the location in Grover Beach and have been running Spoon Trade for several years. The food that they serve is from local farmers and ranchers. They try very hard to keep things local and organic, and try their very best to serve not just food but the spirit of the customers.
Terrilee Coleman, Virginia Perry Souza, and Bob Curry then had the wine auction. We had several winners of multiple wine offerings. Fred Donati, Tom Martinez, Cynthia Schur, Ron Nanning, and Barb Blanchard won the full cases of wine. George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Hillary Clinton, Melania Trump, and Gavin Newsome won the single bottles of wine.
Yvonne Biely had the Exemption Badge and talked about the “Toys For Court Kids” program which is a program that she took on many years ago. She collects stuffed animals and books and gives them to children who are in the courtroom. It keeps them from getting so bored. She is retiring from running this program and wondered if our club would perhaps pick it up this coming year.
Heather Weare reminded us that we need to get our RSVP’s in to her for Michelle’s Step Down in a couple of weeks.
John Henning substituted for Fine Master Ken Dally who was on vacation. Fred Sanders was recognized for his 39 years of wedded bliss. Fred was really feeling guilty as he offered $100 for his anniversary.
Heather Weare celebrated her 21st anniversary by going to one of her children’s events, then dumping them with her oldest child and going to Jocko’s. She agreed to pay $25.
Moving on to club anniversaries, Michelle Shipman celebrated 6 years in the club. She agreed to pay $10. Heather Weare was hit up again as she celebrated 18 years in the club. She agreed to pay $20 for all of her fond memories.
Lynda Gantt had an article in the Santa Maria Times about “Today’s World of the Adolescent.” Unfortunately she had trouble remembering what she had said since she wrote it so long ago. Perhaps she should be writing an article about “Memory Issues in an Aging Population.” She agreed to pay $20.
The Fine Master then asked several Rotarians Rotary related questions. If they did not have the correct answer they had to pay $10. If they had the correct answer they could designate their fine to another member of their table. Fred Donati, Judy Hearn, Bob Curry, Ron Nanning, James Stoddard, and Virginia Perry Souza left with $10 less in their pockets.
The drawing for the Exemption Badge was held and Tom Martinez was the winner. He said he was not going to be at the next meeting, so it was raffled off and Heather Weare paid $30 to be fine free next week.
There was no winner of the 50/50 drawing so the pot will go up next week.
THANK YOU AGAIN JOHN!!!!
