President's Message

Fellow Rotarians,

Thanks again to Richard Batalla and the YMCA for hosting our visit last week, where we heard about some of the impactful ways the YMCA is serving our community. We return to the Inn this week with Karen Ortiz from the Central Coast chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. She’ll be talking about their current projects and activities. Please join us!

We are also getting started with our annual wine raffle, for which we plan to draw prizes at the first meeting in June. Tickets will be available soon, but you can also begin to bring in your two bottles of wine. We’ll talk more about the raffle at our meeting this week.

We have one remaining speaker vacancy in June. You can add your speaker to our calendar at this link: http://tinyurl.com/SMRotaryCalendar

Maricopa Update

Last week Homer Higgenbottom and Januvius Winterbottom went to the Mayor's office to discuss budgetary matters.  Homer started, "I'm really concerned about our economy.  Interest rates are up, inflation is up, but incomes are about the same.  It is hard to cope.  Everybody has to cut back just to live."  Januvius offered, "Google is cutting back.  Amazon is having layoffs.  I heard that Disney is cutting back.  Snow White now only has three dwarfs.  And they have 53 dalmatians, instead of 101."  The Mayor said, "I've had to cut back on the police department.  I purchased some manikins from Macy's, dressed them in police uniforms, placed a cup of coffee in one hand and a donut in the other, and stationed them at strategic locations around town.  I also told the city arborist that unless he could show me money growing on trees, he was going to be let go."

The Rotary Club of Santa Maria Elevator Speech

We are a leadership organization comprised of local business, civic, and professional leaders.

We are a nonpolitical nonsectarian service club.

We meet regularly to get to know each other, form friendships, and get things done in our community.

In 2020 we had a virtual fundraiser and raised over $53,000  which we gave to five local charities:

     Orcutt Trails

     CASA

     Casa of Hope

     ECHO/Band of Brothers

     YMCA

We support the Interact Club at St. Joseph's High School and we donate scholarships to Allan Hancock College.

We clean up Buena Vista Park and with three other Rotary clubs we coordinate the Rotary Christmas Parade.

Come and learn more about our club's humanitarian service and high ethical standards and help us build good will in our community.

THE FOUR-WAY TEST
of the things we think, say, or do:

1.  Is it the truth?
2.  Is it fair to all concerned?
3.  Will it build goodwill and better friendships?
4.  Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

THE OBJECT OF ROTARY

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

First The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

Second High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as on opportunity to serve society;

Third The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

Fourth The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

ROTARIAN CODE OF CONDUCT

The following code of conduct has been adopted for the use of Rotarians:

As a Rotarian, I will

1.  Act with integrity and high ethical standards in my personal and professional life
2.  Deal fairly with others and treat them and their occupations with respect
3.  Use my professional skills through Rotary to:  mentor young people, help those with special needs, and improve people's quality of life in my community and in the world
4.  Avoid behavior that reflects adversely on Rotary or other Rotarians
5.  Help maintain a  harassment-free environment in Rotary meetings, events, and activities, report any suspected harassment, and help ensure non-retaliation to those individuals that report harassment.
