MEETING NOTES
OCTOBER 16th MEETING

Call to Order: RON NANNING
Pledge:  Kan Dally
(my apology for forgetting the name of the member sharing the day's Invocation)

Bob Frias introduced our Guest Speaker,
SHIRLEY CONTRERAS

Shirley delighted the room with her amazing knowledge of Santa Maria history.  In addition, in advance of the upcoming Halloween Day, Shirley took us all through a step-by-step walk through the Santa Maria Cemetery with personal introductions to some of Santa Maria's pioneers and founders.  Despite the occasional microphone interference, caused UNDOUBTEDLY by some frisky Pioneer Spirits in the room, Shirley dazzled the Club with her stories from our City's past with her fabulous humorous style....THANK YOU Shirley!

Fines and Brags - Globetrotters Ken Dally and Susan Rees...

...were each fined for their trips to Ireland, Scotland (Dally), Belgium, Maui, and the east coast (Rees).

Exemption Badge - Fred Donati
In his trademark entertaining style, Fred took us through a trip BACK in Time and described our Club in 1979 when he was a 36 years old Rotary novice...a few excerpts...
*  The Club was referred to as "A Coat and Tie Club" for the member's formal attire at each weekly meeting.
*  Lunch meetings at the Inn PACKED the room with up to 100 members.
*  Lunches cost $10 and members STILL gripped about the cost.
*  In 1983, the club raised $76,000 for the new Polio Plus campaign.
*  Fred told us a hilarious story about a Bee Keeper Guest Speaker who inadvertently let a small swarm of his bees escape into the room.
* Topping his presentation was an even-more hilarious description of the two "Guests" during a meeting who got into a knock-down-drag-out "fight", then turned out to be two ACTOR-Members of the new PCPA Theater group who staged the fight for the benefit of the Club and their Guest Speaker Presentation.
Donati's MUST READ Book: "Boys in the Boat" about a Gold Medal winning Rowing Crew from the Univ. of Washington.

Next Week's Exemption Badge:
