Ooops, wrong Scott,
The meeting was called to order by Past Club President Scott Dunn (2007-2008) who invited Barb Blanchard to lead the Club in the Flag Pledge and Yvonne Biely to deliver the invocation.
In an new twist to the meeting agenda, Jim Talbott was called to the lectern to share some Club Trivia. Members were stumped and failed to identify pictures of Jesse H. Chambers, our FIRST Club President
who presided over the Club in our first TWO terms (’22-’23 & ’23-’24) and C. Leo Preisker our second President (’24-’25).
Members were equally mystified by Talbott’s contention that Preisker’s "resemblance to Hollywood star Warren Beatty" was “proof positive that TIME TRAVEL exists” and his assertion that Beatty traveled BACK IN TIME, under the assumed name of C. Leo Preisker to become the second Club President….
...vs...
STEP AWAY from the Pinot and your “Back to the Future” videos, Jim!!
Oh-kee-doke!!!
Jim’s Club Trivia wrapped up with a list of the NINE Club Presidents whose last names have become Street Names
in town (Church, Stokes, Dyer, Tunnell, Fesler, Adler, Wikenden, Roemer, and West), TWO past Presidents with Parks named after them (Preisker and Waller),
...and...
ONE Reservoir/Dam namesake (Twitchell),
and shamelessly mentioned the past Club President S. Jon Gudmunds, who was responsible for creating the SMOOTH acronym, the company that Jim manages (NO picture Jim).
Scott thankfully resumed control over the meeting and introduced Mike Leedom, the Operations Manager at Plantel Nurseries. Mike did a stellar job detailing Plantel’s history in Santa Maria, as well as the variety of agricultural products and services that they produce. A number of members were amazed, to include your Rotator Editor, with Mike's description of the automated planting machines that are being developed. THANK YOU Scott and Bob Frias for bringing Mr. Leedom to the Club.
Patrice Mosbey led off the Committee Reports with a list of upcoming Community Service opportunities that the Club will be able to participate in. A Sips-n-Sombrero Planning Committee meeting was announced for Thursday, 8/9/2018 at Panera on Betteravia.
The Treasury HIT THE JACKPOT with Fines for August. In attendance was Birthday Girl Barb Blanchard,
celebrating her first birthday as a Rotarian on August 8th. As a new Club Member, Barb recognized the value and benefit of having the TABLE PAY HER FINE….good work Barb!!!
Blanche Fugate was recognized for her EIGHTEEN YEARS with our Club and popped for a rounded-UP fine of $20.
Scott then listed FIVE Rotarians who were given The Sun’s “Best of…Award” for the region.
Best Local Bank: Rabobank, although member Diana Harb was not aware of the award.
Best Electrician: Ever Ready Electric - Frank Cully, $20
Best Contractor: A.J. Diani Construction – Jason Diani, $50(??)
Best Happy Hour: Santa Maria Inn Tap Room – Blanche Fugate ($100!!!)
Best Senior Living Facility: Country Oaks Care Center – John Henning ($25)
CONGRATULATIONS to each of you and THANK YOU for your donations!
Fred Donati was called forward to deliver his Exemption Badge talk but sadly we only had TWO MINUTES for him. Rather than deliver his planned speech, Fred pulled a “Hip Pocket” topic and briefly explained why he feels the Club, in honoring our 96-Year history, should return to holding weekly meetings rather than this year’s twice per month meeting schedule.
Scott listed the next Guest Speakers for upcoming meetings. Dr. Bob Miller was the recipient of the August 21st meeting’s Exemption Badge assignment, after Blanche forfeited her time due to her schedule conflict that week.
...Oops, wrong Frank
Frank Culley offered a Sunshine Report update on Dale Hammond who is recovering from his stroke last month, and has thankfully started rehabilitation. Scott added that his family is quite excited with his progress to date and were VERY appreciative of our expressed thoughts and prayers.
The 50/50 ticket was pulled and Scott Dunn was unsuccessful in finding the coveted White Marble.
The meeting was called to order and WE WERE OUT’A THERE……
