BE THE INSPIRATION

INTERESTED IN JOINING ROTARY?You are ALWAYS welcomed at our Club Meetings.  Check our schedule below!

        PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
I missed a great meeting last week!  A GREAT BIG GIANT thanks goes out to Jim and Scott for pinch hitting at last week’s meeting while I was in San Diego at a conference getting some inspiration… I promise to share at least "one thing “).

We’re six weeks in to trying some new things and so far things seem to be moving forward as well as can be expected at with so many changes all at once.  There’s at least one person who’s not happy about our new schedule.  Feedback is good and it keeps the discussion open.  All I can say is, “Change is ALWAYS hard!”  For everybody!  Even when change is good… We’re creatures of habit and nobody actually wants change.

Hank and I have been living in the back house on our property for four months now.  We’re doing a total Master Suite and Guest Bedroom/Bath remodel and we have no working shower in the main house during construction.  When everything is finished, it’ll be beautiful and more functional than ever.  Yet EVERY SINGLE DAY, guess what I say to myself because I can’t say it here?!

The “No Breakfast Committee” has successfully gained 95% approval to discontinue breakfast on the 3rd Tuesday meeting!!  Personally, I loved breakfast and it looks like I was in the 5% minority so it’s a wrap!!  No more breakfast for lunch.  :(.

Our first social was scheduled for July 24th at 5:30pm in the Wine Bar at the Santa Maria Inn.  Thank you to everybody who attended that night!  It was a fun evening of fellowship with our fellow Rotarians outside of the structure of a club meeting.  Our next social is a Rotary Pool Party scheduled for August 26th at Heather’s house!  Contact Terri Lee if you haven’t already RSVP’ed or if you’re interested in hosting a social this year ‘).  There’s talk about Burgers & Beer at our house sometime this year??

Alli Borja and Barb Blanchard are working on the vocational services meeting for the August 28th.  Can’t wait to see what they’ve got up their sleeves.

We’re dark tomorrow.  Our next meeting is Tuesday, 8/21/18 and we’ll have Erin Krier with the Allen Hancock College AG Program.  Be sure to invite guests!!

Onward & Upward!  Cheers to Moving Forward!  See you on the 21st!!

Michelle Shipman

NO MEETING THIS WEEK....

GO OUT IN OUR COMMUNITY AND BE THE INSPIRATION IN SOMEONE'S LIFE!

MEETING NOTES
TUESDAY, AUGUST 7th?

 Ooops, wrong Scott,
The meeting was called to order by Past Club President Scott Dunn (2007-2008) who invited Barb Blanchard to lead the Club in the Flag Pledge and Yvonne Biely to deliver the invocation.

In an new twist to the meeting agenda, Jim Talbott was called to the lectern to share some Club Trivia.  Members were stumped and failed to identify pictures of Jesse H. Chambers, our FIRST Club President
who presided over the Club in our first TWO terms (’22-’23 & ’23-’24) and C. Leo Preisker our second President (’24-’25).

Members were equally mystified by Talbott’s contention that Preisker’s "resemblance to Hollywood star Warren Beatty" was “proof positive that TIME TRAVEL exists” and his assertion that Beatty traveled BACK IN TIME, under the assumed name of C. Leo Preisker to become the second Club President….
...vs...

STEP AWAY from the Pinot and your “Back to the Future” videos, Jim!!

Oh-kee-doke!!!

Jim’s Club Trivia wrapped up with a list of the NINE Club Presidents whose last names have become Street Names

and shamelessly mentioned the past Club President S. Jon Gudmunds, who was responsible for creating the SMOOTH acronym, the company that Jim manages (NO picture Jim).

Scott thankfully resumed control over the meeting and introduced Mike Leedom, the Operations Manager at Plantel Nurseries.  Mike did a stellar job detailing Plantel’s history in Santa Maria, as well as the variety of agricultural products and services that they produce.  A number of members were amazed, to include your Rotator Editor, with Mike's description of the automated planting machines that are being developed.  THANK YOU Scott and Bob Frias for bringing Mr. Leedom to the Club.

Patrice Mosbey led off the Committee Reports with a list of upcoming Community Service opportunities that the Club will be able to participate in.  A Sips-n-Sombrero Planning Committee meeting was announced for Thursday, 8/9/2018 at Panera on Betteravia.

The Treasury HIT THE JACKPOT with Fines for August.  In attendance was Birthday Girl Barb Blanchard,
celebrating her first birthday as a Rotarian on August 8th.  As a new Club Member, Barb recognized the value and benefit of having the TABLE PAY HER FINE….good work Barb!!!

Blanche Fugate was recognized for her EIGHTEEN YEARS with our Club and popped for a rounded-UP fine of $20.

Scott then listed FIVE Rotarians who were given The Sun’s “Best of…Award” for the region.

CONGRATULATIONS to each of you and THANK YOU for your donations!

Fred Donati was called forward to deliver his Exemption Badge talk but sadly we only had TWO MINUTES for him.  Rather than deliver his planned speech, Fred pulled a “Hip Pocket” topic and briefly explained why he feels the Club, in honoring our 96-Year history, should return to holding weekly meetings rather than this year’s twice per month meeting schedule.

Scott listed the next Guest Speakers for upcoming meetings.  Dr. Bob Miller was the recipient of the August 21st meeting’s Exemption Badge assignment, after Blanche forfeited her time due to her schedule conflict that week.

...Oops, wrong Frank
Frank Culley offered a Sunshine Report update on Dale Hammond who is recovering from his stroke last month, and has thankfully started rehabilitation.  Scott added that his family is quite excited with his progress to date and were VERY appreciative of our expressed thoughts and prayers.

The 50/50 ticket was pulled and Scott Dunn was unsuccessful in finding the coveted White Marble.

The meeting was called to order and WE WERE OUT’A THERE……
