Maricopa Update

Last week Homer Higgenbottom and Januvius Winterbottom met at the local coffee shop to discuss vacationing.  Homer asked, "Are you going to go on a vacation this summer?"  Januvius replied, "I'm glad you asked.  As a matter of fact I was discussing that with my wife this morning.  I think we are going to go to North Carolina."  "That's wonderful," said Homer, "Are you going to go to Asheville to see the Biltmore House, or perhaps the Outer Banks for some time on the beach?" "Well, no.  We're not going to either of those places.  I think we are going to Camp Lejeune."  "Why on earth are you going to go to Camp Lejeune?" inquired Homer.  Januvius answered, "We are going there so we can drink the water.  I've seen on the TV that if you drink the water there you can get a big settlement from the government."  "Januvius," shouted Homer, "What on earth are you thinking?  Those settlements are for those people who drank the water between 1953 and 1987.  You weren't there at that time."  "I was thinking I could fudge a little bit on the dates.  After all, 2023 is pretty near to 1987, isn't it?" asked Januvius.  "No it isn't.  Not in this case.  So you're telling me that you are ready to lie in order to get some settlement money that you are not entitled to.  Where is your self respect?  Where is your integrity?" asked Homer.  "Well," paused Januvius ". . . I'm thinking about it."  Homer jumped on Januvius, "What ever happened to the Four Way Test?  You need to be honest with yourself."  "OK, you're right.  I shouldn't lie just to get some money.  Maybe we will go to East Palestine, Ohio instead," answered Januvius.

What is the importance of Rotary?

"We were having fun, doing good work, and we liked each other," she says. "Sometimes we try to over-manufacture the reason why people join and stay."

The Rotary Club of Santa Maria Elevator Speech

We are a leadership organization comprised of local business, civic, and professional leaders.

We are a nonpolitical nonsectarian service club.

We meet regularly to get to know each other, form friendships, and get things done in our community.

In 2020 we had a virtual fundraiser and raised over $53,000  which we gave to five local charities:

     Orcutt Trails

     CASA

     Casa of Hope

     ECHO/Band of Brothers

     YMCA

We support the Interact Club at St. Joseph's High School and we donate scholarships to Allan Hancock College.

We clean up Buena Vista Park and with three other Rotary clubs we coordinate the Rotary Christmas Parade.

Come and learn more about our club's humanitarian service and high ethical standards and help us build good will in our community.

THE FOUR-WAY TEST
of the things we think, say, or do:

1.  Is it the truth?
2.  Is it fair to all concerned?
3.  Will it build goodwill and better friendships?
4.  Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

THE OBJECT OF ROTARY

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

First The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

Second High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as on opportunity to serve society;

Third The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

Fourth The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

ROTARIAN CODE OF CONDUCT

The following code of conduct has been adopted for the use of Rotarians:

1.  Act with integrity and high ethical standards in my personal and professional life
2.  Deal fairly with others and treat them and their occupations with respect
3.  Use my professional skills through Rotary to:  mentor young people, help those with special needs, and improve people's quality of life in my community and in the world
4.  Avoid behavior that reflects adversely on Rotary or other Rotarians
