THE ROTATOR

BE THE INSPIRATION
 Dear Fellow Rotarians,
I hope you all enjoyed the meeting last week with Heather at the helm. Heather just makes everything fun! I wish I could have been there!
Instead, I was stuck in Cleveland on my way to Boston early that morning. My flight the previous day had been cancelled along with hundreds of other flights headed to Boston. The reports seem to differ but some say Boston got 15 inches of snow the day I happened to be travelling there!
I made the best of my time being stranded in Cleveland. With all of the airport Rock & Roll memorabilia, I was reminded that Cleveland was home to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame! I couldn’t think of another time I’d end up in Cleveland so I might just as well, as Hank would say, “Make Chicken Salad out of Chicken". The thing that stood out the  most for me was that these Rockers were pioneers in their own right. They each took risks and braved a storm. It took courage and confidence to lean against the odds of becoming a star! And one after another, each in their own way, they helped shape a small part of our history.
Webster’s dictionary defines a pioneer as: “a person or group that originates or helps open up a new line of thought or activity or a new method or technical development.” The world is still changing. Our community is changing! Our club was the pioneer for Rotary in our community back in 1922. How can we continue to be pioneers in our ever-growing community? What can we do this year and in the years ahead to keep that pioneering spirit alive? Let me offer what we can do....

Challenge the status quo and stretch ourselves for the greater good.
See you tomorrow … and in the meantime, Dare to be EXTRAordinary!
Yurs, Michelle

GUEST SPEAKER

Champion_Leonard (Nov 2016)

SANTA MARIA FIRED CHIEF
LEONARD CHAMPION
As expected from our fellow Rotarian from the Breakfast Club,
Chief Champion delivered a attention-grabbing presentation
about our city's Fire Department, its history, organization
and the recent responses to the HUGE Sergio's Furniture fire
and the Jan 2018 Montecito storm and debris flow.
DID YOU KNOW:
*  When SM-FD was created in 1913, Santa Maria's population was only 4,000!
*  In 1913 the "department" had THREE chiefs and 6 firefighters.
*  During the Sergio/Shaw's fire, an estimated 750,000 GALLONS of water
was needed to extinguish the fire due to the materials burning.
THANK YOU CHIEF CHAMPION!
