President's Message

I wanted to thank all of you who attended the Celebration of Life on Sunday for our member Andrew Millar.  It was a lovely lunch and the memories shared by his family touched all of the hearts in the audience.  I have faith in the fact that his wife and daughters are finding solace with Andrew’s brothers and sisters.  Andrew’s family has surrounded them with love and strength.

My husband commented after the Celebration, that it had filled in many “gaps” for him in Andrew’s history.  You think that you know someone, but until you hear from that persons family and friends (from the individuals different stages of life), you never know what trials and tribulations they may have faced.  Shared memories also give insight into the lighter nature of people that might otherwise be a “hard nut to crack”.

It isn’t very often that we share the intimacies of our nature with strangers or even with people we have lunch with once a week. I think this concept of personal sharing is one of the reasons that I really enjoy our craft talks.  One of my favorite craft talks was from Frank, who shared how he served cow pie pancakes to his stepfather.  It’s these little insights that make us realize we are all human, full of mischief, achievement, disappointments and memories worth sharing.  Sharing these things might make us feel more vulnerable, but in the end they bring us closer to those around us and create an environment where people are willing to open up to us, help us and appreciate us.

So when you are called upon to do a craft talk, remember that this is your chance to shine.  We don’t want to just hear about what you do now, we want to hear about where you are from, what your life has been like and what you have been through.  It’s also important to “recycle” craft talks, so that we can hear from seasoned members about their history.  If there isn’t time for a craft talk, just take the time to ask the person next to you at lunch, “Hey, what’s your story?”  I think you would be surprised by the response you might get.

 Last Week's Meeting

Classification:  British Doorman

HRHYPHW called the meeting to order at 12:10 PM.  Lynda Gantt delivered the Invocation and Jim Talbott led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

There was one visiting Rotarian.  Virginia Perry Souza introduced Vickie Connor from the Monday Evening Club.

There were several guests of Rotarians.  Virginia Perry Souza introduced Alejandra Maloney from the People's Self Help Housing.  She then misintroduced her friend (perhaps former friend at this point) Cliff Garrett, and our program Paul Chappell.  Lynda Gantt introduced her intern Lester Willis.  Frank Culley introduced James Stoddard from Idler's.

Sunshine Reporter Frank Culley had nothing to report, and neither did anyone else.

Virginia Perry Souza introduced Paul Chappell.  He is a West Point grad and served in the Army for 7years prior to his discharge in 2009.  He grew up in Alabama and had a lot of rage inside of him as a young man, frequently getting into fights at school.  He talked about the basic needs of people.  Many people believe that food and shelter are the primary needs, but he thinks otherwise.  He believes that purpose and meaning are more important than food.  If you have a purpose you will be motivated to get food.  He also believes that belonging, being part of a group, is a basic need.  All the mass shooters have been people who suffer from feelings of alienation.  We also have a need for self worth.   Many people who are bullied do not have a feeling of self worth, and as a result have thoughts of committing suicide.  He likes Rotary because we can meet those basic needs, purpose, belonging, and self worth.  He also thinks that humans have a need for explanations.  We are always asking why  something happened.  We may come up with a fallacious reason for why something happened, but at least we have a reason.  We all have a world view as to why things happen.  When that world view is threatened we often become aggressive. We have a need for intimate relationships, which are relationships with people we trust.  There are two kinds of poverty.  There is material poverty and there is spiritual poverty, which is more dangerous.  As a peace educator he believes that peace literacy is a skill set that needs to be taught.  Many conflicts start because someone is disrespected.  In martial arts he learned to respect everyone, especially your opponent.  One way to convey respect to someone is to listen to them, not just hear them.

Exemption Badge holder Diana Harb talked to us about May holidays.  There are 24 observances in May, and not one of them is her birthday.  May is National Military Month.  This explains why there are so many military observances in May.  We need to celebrate our families, friends, and those who came before us.

Under announcements HRHYPHW said that June 19th is her Step Down.  She only has two more meetings as we have guest Presidents in the month of June.

Terrilee Coleman reminded us that the wine raffle is in two weeks.  We need to get our two bottles of wine to her by next Tuesday, or else we will be billed a small fortune.  As a reminder the following persons need to bring in wine or suffer the consequences:  Yvonne Biely, Allison Borja, Jason Diani, Jason Telaner, Scott Dunn, Karen Fothergill, Blanche Fugate, Lynda Gantt, Hans Kardel, Danielle Martinez, Cody Miller, Laura Mohajer, and Michelle Shipman.

HRHYPHW said that the memorial for Andrew Millar will be this Sunday at the Elks.  Andrew's wife Terry would like us to bring desserts for this celebration of Andrew's life.

Our exchange student Nicey will be here next week for the last time.  She will be pitching her cook book.  She is also singing with the Righetti Choir and will be performing at Pioneer High School on May 22nd.  Tickets are $5.

Under fines and brags former basketball standout Rick Ellison is in Tahiti this week.  He will pay dearly when he returns.

Jenifer Napoli announced that her son is graduating from Nipomo High School and has secured a volleyball scholarship from Hiram University.  She gladly paid $50.

Master procrastinator Jason Telander bragged of his procrastination skills to his five year old daughter.  She knew for a long time that she had to have 300 books read to her by last week.  She procrastinated and had to have 300 books read to her over the weekend in order to receive a trophy.  She is proud of her trophy and Jason is proud of her procrastination skills.  He received a $5 fine, which he will pay whenever he gets around to it.

Still unmarried, Patrice Mosby is happy that her daughter is back from Africa.  She will be giving us a program in the near future, but for now Patrice settled for paying $5.

Blanche Fugate is pleased as punch that her oldest son got engaged.  She gleefully parted with $50.

There was $1578.50 as the winner's share of the 50/50 drawing.  Frank Culley started out with 17 marbles in the bucket, but when he found out that Fred Pratt had the lucky ticket, he added a few more marbles.  Fred had no luck at selecting the correct marble.

The meeting was adjourned at 1:16 PM.
