President's Message

It always gets a little crazy this time of year with parties, presents, friends, relatives, and Rotary.  We do love all the excitement and we wouldn't have it any other way.  Many thanks to Patrice Mosby for heading up the Bell Ringing for the Salvation Army last Saturday.  I know I had a great time ringing the bell and I'm sure everyone else did also.  The Salvation Army does so much for people who are facing very hard times.  Sometimes I feel that ringing the bell for an hour is not showing nearly enough appreciation for this organization.

Patrice is also working on the RiseUP program.  For all of you who like to buy presents, this is right up your alley.  We all know that there are a lot of families in Santa Maria that are just barely making it.  This program is designed to help one of those families.  She has posted in the Rotator the list of Christmas presents needed for this family.  Please sign up as soon as you can, and call Patrice if you have any questions.

Finally, we have a Christmas party tomorrow night at my house.  Remember, Santa will be there and children and spouses are very welcome.  It will be very much like the traditional party we have had for many years, with the exception that it will be at my house and it is a potluck.  I'm sure everyone will have a good time.

YIRS,

Her Royal Highness, Your President, Heather Weare
President 2017-2018

HRHYPHW called the meeting to order at 12:11 PM.  Recently Irish Lassie Camille O'Brien delivered the Invocation.  Jim Talbott led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

HRHYPHW hosted an episode of "This Is Your Life" celebrating the retirement of Camille O'Brien.  We had testimonials from Wendy Foxen, who has been her best friend forever, from Jim Glines, who hired her in 1984, from Ron Nanning, who has been her __________ (you fill in the blank) for many years, and from Bob Miller, whose wife burst into tears when she heard that Camille was retiring.  It was a fitting tribute to someone who has served our club for a long time.

There was actually one visiting Rotarian in attendance.  Wendy Foxen from the Breakfast Club introduced herself.

There was one guest of a Rotarian.  Virginia Perry Souza introduced Catalina McIsaac, our substitute speaker.

Sunshine Reporter Frank Culley said that his wife is stable and is at home.

Virginia Perry Souza explained that Deepa Willingham could not make our meeting as she was dealing with a friend who was on life support.  She introduced Catalina McIsaac, who talked about the Art.Peace.Imagine program.  This program uses an empty chair as a way of resolving conflicts in a peaceful manner.  This started in 2009 when she painted a chair for a classroom.  They received a grant from the Santa Barbara Foundation to expand the program.  In 2013 they became a 501(C)(3).  This program has been successfully used at the Los Prietos Boys Camp.   Recently they set up a bench at a school that has been designated as a sanctuary bench.

Exemption Badge holder Diana Harb was off hunting for Jason Diani in the Bermuda Triangle and was not in attendance.  Fred Pratt bought the Exemption Badge for $20 and talked about his visit to Deepa's school in Kolkata.  Deepa experienced much discrimination against women when she was growing up in India, so she started a school for girls up to age of 15 that would help them get an education and learn something other than cooking, cleaning, and making babies.  He thinks you can sponsor a girl to attend this school for $350 to $400 per year.

Moving on to Fines and Brags, HRHYPHW informed us that Monday was International Day of the Cookie.  Only Patrice Mosby and John Henning owned up to eating cookies on Monday, so everyone else was fined $1, unless you had a special excuse signed by HRHYPHW and your attending physician.

Hans Kardel, Jr. bragged that his daughters danced at a production of "Babes in Toyland" that lasted almost as long as a city council meeting.   For being the ultimate dance parent he shelled out $25.

Bob Miller found out that his wife was a borderline diabetic and was on track to becoming a full blown diabetic.  He suggested that she go on a diet.  She turned the me into a we and since then she has lost 23 pounds and he has lost 17 pounds, and he hasn't experienced any pain.  Because he said she was sweeter than any candy he ever tasted he was not fined.

Andrew Millar wrote an excellent Letter to the Editor last week regarding Joni Gray.  Mr. Lincoln departed his wallet.

Under Celebrations, Ruben Escobedo celebrated his birthday recently.  He and his wife left the kids with responsible childcare and got out of town for two days.  He paid $20 for the trip and the table paid for his birthday.

It was a banner day for Camille O'Brien who recently celebrated her birthday.  Evidently Marty believes that nothing says "Romance" like binoculars and a yoga mat.  "The thrill is gone!"

George Railey celebrated two years in our club.  He was only assessed $2 under the proviso that he play the Star Spangled Banner on his saxophone at a club meeting in the near future.

HRHYPHW reminded us that next Tuesday we will not have a meeting at noon at the Santa Maria Inn.  Instead we are having the Christmas Party at her house from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.  Santa Claus will be there with presents for children.  Guests and children of all ages are invited.  Please sign up if you are interested.

The next Tuesday we will have the Tom & Jerry party in the Tap Room.  We will be ordering off the menu, so bring your money or credit card with you.

We will be dark on December 26th and on January 2nd.  On January 9th we will have a surprise President.

Alice Patino reminded us that Thursday is Pearl Harbor Day and they will be having a special Freedom Monument Celebration that day.

Camille O'Brien brought in an extra large Rotary jacket that previously belonged to Keith Lapp.  Tom Martinez said that Brandon McCool was looking for one and he would contact him.

The unmarried Patrice Mosby reminded us of the Bell Ringing this Saturday from 10:00 AM until 6:00 PM at the Wal Mart.  She still had some openings for bell ringers.

She also said that she is in need of gifts for the RiseUP family.  She needs members to select an item or items from the list, purchase the item or items, and get them to her so she can get them to the family before Christmas.

Andrew Millar told a joke and for a change there were more laughs than boos.

There was $15,000 in the 50/50 pot.  Check that, $15,000 is Rick Haydon's monthly pension from the City of Santa Maria.  There was $789 as the winner's share of the 50/50 pot.  Alice Patino had the lucky ticket, but the clear marble eluded her.

HRHYPHW adjourned the meeting at 1:24 PM.

RiseUP Program

RiseUP is a three year pilot program the Y designed with the assistance of Hancock College in response to the current gang situation in our community.  There are two approaches in dealing with the gang situation, early prevention and intervention. The Y is well suited to address early prevention and the Mayor's task force Youth Protection Committee will be working with the older children on intervention.  The Y is bringing in nine year olds because this is the statistically proven age where preventative behavior is most effective.  RiseUP started in the summer of 2016 with 25 third grade local students.  These are nine year old students whose parents work long hours to provide for their families, children with gang involvement and/or drug abuse in their families, or students who are lacking social skills and are in need of extra motivation to stay in school. They have been selected for the program by teachers and principals at five schools.  The program's main objective is to give these students an opportunity they would never otherwise experience.  The goal is to circumvent future gang behavior by presenting tangible options to both these students and their parents, before they make poor life choices.  The program consists of four key components:  swimming lessons, STEM, literacy, and the Health Behavior Initiative (HBI).  The STEM components, the exposure to networking, and the variety of hands on activities will support them educationally while increasing their confidence.

The weekly speakers and programs are critical to a successful club!  If you have an idea or a program that you would like to see,

please contact Yvonne Biely, Program Chairman.  And as Yvonne always says,  “The one thing women don’t want to find in their stockings on Christmas morning is their husband.”
