President's Message

I want to start by thanking all of those who attended the Christmas Party last week.  Thank you for sharing in the fellowship, I think that everyone had a really great time.  I know that some of you have been filling out the monthly survey sent out by district.  It seems that the overwhelming consensus is that we have more meetings that are "social".  With that in mind, I will assume that I will see everyone at the Tom and Jerry Party tomorrow?  In addition, I want to thank Ruben and Brandon for arranging so many off-sites this Rotary year, I certainly appreciate the diversity of the off-sites and recognize how getting Rotarians to a different meeting spot is a bit like herding cats.

Tomorrow will be our last meeting before the New Year.  Take the next couple of weeks to enjoy your friends and family.  I challenge all of you to call a friend whom you have not spoken to in more than 6 months.

Time goes by so quickly, I bet when you look back you think that it was only yesterday that you spoke to some of these people and I also bet that you are wrong.  Take time for those friends that feel "always there" but really are far away.  Maybe it's the friend from High School that you follow on Facebook, but haven't shared thoughts with in months or years.  In this age of instant postings and tweets, our comments are brief and often not heartfelt or meaningful.  Remember what it was like to talk on the phone?  Hear the persons voice, instead of responding with a smiley face?

That is my challenge to you, I hope that at least some of you take it up.  Catch up with someone before you no longer have the chance, everything else can surely wait.

YIRS,

Her Royal Highness, Your President, Heather Weare
President 2017-2018

RiseUP Program

RiseUP is a three year pilot program the Y designed with the assistance of Hancock College in response to the current gang situation in our community.  There are two approaches in dealing with the gang situation, early prevention and intervention. The Y is well suited to address early prevention and the Mayor's task force Youth Protection Committee will be working with the older children on intervention.  The Y is bringing in nine year olds because this is the statistically proven age where preventative behavior is most effective.  RiseUP started in the summer of 2016 with 25 third grade local students.  These are nine year old students whose parents work long hours to provide for their families, children with gang involvement and/or drug abuse in their families, or students who are lacking social skills and are in need of extra motivation to stay in school. They have been selected for the program by teachers and principals at five schools.  The program's main objective is to give these students an opportunity they would never otherwise experience.  The goal is to circumvent future gang behavior by presenting tangible options to both these students and their parents, before they make poor life choices.  The program consists of four key components:  swimming lessons, STEM, literacy, and the Health Behavior Initiative (HBI).  The STEM components, the exposure to networking, and the variety of hands on activities will support them educationally while increasing their confidence.
