Rotary Club of Santa Maria
President's Message

Dear Rotarians,

It was good to hear from the doctors and administrators from the Dignity Behavioral Group.  Santa Maria is fortunate to have a program like this in our city.  I personally know a family that has benefited greatly from the aid that this program provides! To know that 1 in 5 in our community may suffer from a psychiatric illness in any given year highlights the need for the resources that the programs provide.  Stress, substance abuse, depression, anxiety and manic breaks are all traits that can be recognized and treated by these groups!

Another shout out to Erin Krier and her band of volunteers for putting together a great place for a person in our community to reside in their journey to full employment and housing.

This next week we will hear from Janet Rowse who works with groups on the Central Coast in the fight against drug abuse and particularly fentanyl.  This is becoming a greater issue as this pervasive drug is
readily available on the streets.

Club History

Do you know that Joni Gray was the first woman initiated in our club?  In what year was she initiated?   You can find the answer by going to the club website, where Susan Rees has posted the history books of the first 75 years of our club, or you can go to the bottom of the Rotator.

Maricopa Update

Last week Homer Higgenbottom and Januvius Winterbottom met at the local coffee shop to discuss Japan and the International Date Line.  Homer asked, "What's new with you this week?"  Januvius replied, "Do you remember that I told you about my niece Tatiana Tidybottom winning the trip to Japan?"  Homer answered, "I sure do.  Isn't that trip coming up pretty soon?"  "Yes it is," said Januvius, "She and her husband, Timothy, are supposed to leave next week, but there's a problem.  She was telling him that because of the International Date Line they would loose a day on the way to Japan, but that they would gain a day on the way back.  He began to panic, "Is this some sort of time machine?  I don't want to take a chance on any time machine.  What happens if the time machine sends me back to the 1700's?  I'm an automobile mechanic.  The internal combustion engine wasn't even invented until 1860.  How would I make a living?"  She is all in a tizzy and doesn't know how to convince him that he's not going to end up in the 1700's.  I don't know what she should do to talk him out of this time machine fear."  Homer thought about it for a minute then mused, "She should tell him that Governor Nuisance, I mean Governor Newsom has outlawed time machines because they emit high levels of hydrocarbons and are a threat to climate change.  I'm sure he will understand that."  Januvius asked, "Are you sure that this adheres to the Four Way Test?"  Homer answered, "That will be our little secret."

The Rotary Club of Santa Maria Elevator Speech

We are a leadership organization comprised of local business, civic, and professional leaders.

We are a nonpolitical nonsectarian service club.

We meet regularly to get to know each other, form friendships, and get things done in our community.

In 2020 we had a virtual fundraiser and raised over $53,000  which we gave to five local charities:

     Orcutt Trails

     CASA

     Casa of Hope

     ECHO/Band of Brothers

     YMCA

We support the Interact Club at St. Joseph's High School and we donate scholarships to Allan Hancock College.

We clean up Buena Vista Park and with three other Rotary clubs we coordinate the Rotary Christmas Parade.

Come and learn more about our club's humanitarian service and high ethical standards and help us build good will in our community.

THE FOUR-WAY TEST
of the things we think, say, or do:

1.  Is it the truth?

2.  Is it fair to all concerned?

3.  Will it build goodwill and better friendships?

4.  Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

THE OBJECT OF ROTARY

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

First The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

Second High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as on opportunity to serve society;

Third The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

Fourth The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

ROTARIAN CODE OF CONDUCT

The following code of conduct has been adopted for the use of Rotarians:

As a Rotarian, I will

1.  Act with integrity and high ethical standards in my personal and professional life
2.  Deal fairly with others and treat them and their occupations with respect
3.  Use my professional skills through Rotary to:  mentor young people, help those with special needs, and improve people's quality of life in my community and in the world
4.  Avoid behavior that reflects adversely on Rotary or other Rotarians
5.  Help maintain a  harassment-free environment in Rotary meetings, events, and activities, report any suspected harassment, and help ensure non-retaliation to those individuals that report harassment.
